The White-winged Crossbill breeds farther north than the Red Crossbill, which makes it a harder bird to observe. These colourful birds are more likely to be seen in the winter months when the snow and colder weather brings them more south. It is not unusual to see these birds gathered in small flocks on gravel roads or on the shoulders of paved highways, picking up sand to help digest their cone seeds.
